The Greatest Gift

But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. This very day in David’s town your Saviour was born — Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10‭-‬11 GNB

The Greatest Gift

A few weeks ago,  I received a very clear instruction from my head. As I sat at the dining room table, my head walked in with a certain look on his face. He had this worried look, it was as though he wasn’t expecting me to be at home! It was a familiar look which I knew all to well. (Ladies, you know that look on your face, when your secret online orders arrive and for that brief moment you pray to God that your hubby doesn’t walk in at the same time!) Whew! Yes, that was my BC life, the postman and I had quite a great working relationship. I was spot on! He looked at me straight in the eye and said, “Do not open the door today, my online orders are coming.” Now, why couldn’t I have been this honest in my BC Life!

“For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Saviour.” Ephesians 5: 23

As my husband opened the door, the postman handed him the order which he placed immediately into a black heavy-duty garbage bag. As he entered the dining room he carried with him the garbage bag containing this gift, tied at the top and filled with air. He had an air-filled bag with what I’m assuming to be a tiny present, he was now pretending it was a struggle to lift. Holding onto his back, he said wearily, “Oh wow, this gift is ever so heavy.”  As I looked at his face, I knew it was one of his innovative plans he had designed to deter me from ruining his Christmas surprise ! He had spent years mastering the art of outsmarting me with these clever ideas.  I’ll tell you why he did this.

For many years, the most exciting thing about Christmas for me, was receiving the most expensive gifts!  God bless my husband, he is certainly thanking Jesus for rescuing me from his wallet. Yes, I said it! As I watched my husband with this bag in his hand, a thought came to me. It was the first time in my life the type or the size of this gift didn’t matter, for I had the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the father of  lights whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” James 1:17. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift” 2 Corinthians 9.

The Grand Finale

I sat in church a few Sundays ago, and I was intrigued by the Christmas sermon. The minister reminded us about God’s never-ending love for us, from the beginning of creation. In demonstrating his concern for us, he sent prophets and judges to warn us about sin, yet we continued to sin.  Finally, God decided that it was important for him to do what love required of him, God decided it was time for the grand finale! Our Father loved us so much, he decided to demonstrate one final act of love, he sent his one and only son, Jesus Christ.

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. John 3:16

This was the grand finale!

The son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation (Colossians 1:15). God came to earth in human flesh.

How amazing is this!

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Luke 2:14 KJV

I have always enjoyed Christmas, but this Christmas is quite different for me. It’s my first Christian Christmas! It was the first time I truly realised the significance of  Christmas and I am truly thankful for the sacrifice which was made for us.  In the old testament, the Lord foretold the people of a future king who will come riding on a donkey.  Honestly, which king do you know is willing to travel in such humility? The Lord explained that this King will bring peace among nations and he will rule from sea to sea, from the river to the ends of the earths( Zechariah 9:9‭-‬10). Prior to this declaration, the Lord was angry with his people. Why was he so angry?

God commanded his people to show kindness and mercy to one another. He begged his people not to oppress widows, orphans, foreigners and those in need. However, they stubbornly refused, they closed their minds and made their hearts as hard as rock and because they didn’t listen he became very angry (Zechariah 7:8‭-‬12 GNB).

God sacrificed his son not only for us to receive eternal life, but he was sending a King who will be accepting of all people. Jesus didn’t care if your skin was blue, yellow or pink, he cared for us all. He was a Saviour for the rich and a Saviour for the poor. He was the King of the Jews and the King of the Gentiles (none Jewish people) and this was why he was hated.  Irrespective of race, culture and status, a King was born for us all! We all have a free gift in Christ!

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people.” Jesus said
Luke 4:18‭-‬19 GNB

At the birth of baby Jesus, we see God’s plan for the world. Three wise men, all foreigners from the east had followed a star and brought gifts to praise this baby boy.

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:11

This was the first sign of something great! Today, it is assumed that we follow the Christmas tradition of exchanging gifts to honour these men, who were the first non Jews  to worship Jesus.  Yes, it’s assumed, I found this somewhere on the internet. It’s not Biblical, but it does make an interesting argument 🙂

Jesus- The reason for the season

In less than a week, we will celebrate Christmas, the most festive time of the year.  Finally, a celebration where 2.5 billion Christians, all unbelievers or the  “I think something is out there” kind of people can celebrate.  It’s the only time of the year I can get away with recruiting for Christ without someone looking at me funny. I do believe this was how God always intended for us all to live. I know we can still experience this peace on any ordinary day, but we must remain close to him. As we open our gifts and fill our rumbling tummies, it’s vital for us to remember that Jesus is the reason for this season.  It is through Jesus Christ we are made right with God. It is because of Jesus our sins are forgiven and we are given the gift of ever lasting life.

It is true that through the sin of one man death began to rule because of that one man. But how much greater is the result of what was done by the one man, Jesus Christ! All who receive God’s abundant grace and are freely put right with him will rule in life through Christ. Romans 5:17

Tonight’s prayer

Tonight,  I pray that we celebrate this Christmas with Jesus on our minds. I also pray that we grow to become more like him. As we look at the sacrifice He made for us all, let us not grow weary of sacrificing for others.

I also pray for those who are oppressed and in need. I pray that what ever need it may be, God will supply for us all. Whether it be physical, financial or spiritual, I pray that he supplies that need for you.

As 2018 draws to a close, I pray that you and I can draw closer to God. This is the only way we can conquer 2019. Jesus died and was resurrected so that we can live forever, but we must remain in God to receive this great gift. God wants you to come to him freely.

I pray that 2019 is truly an amazing year for us all. Please pray for me as well, I hope for God to grant me the wisdom to continue to write and share His word with you. I pray that through this blog you will be inspired, uplifted and fall madly in love with Jesus.

May God richly bless you 🙂

Merry Christmas and a truly wonderful  2019 🙂

Sleep Well,

  2. Its so easy for even us as Christians to become overwhelm and be sucked in …. It was an amazing feeling me waking up this morning to your word…. Jesus is indeed the reason for the season.

  3. Another great commentary my dear…I couldn’t have penned this better…The greatest love of all is that God loves us so much that His Son became the ultimate sacrifice, hence, He is the reason for the season. Blessings and more blessings on you as you labour in this ‘new’ vineyard..xx
